Traveling Germany — Leipzig, the new Berlin?
Leipzig is a city in the eastern German state of Saxony. For Central Germany, it is a historical center of business, trade and transport, administration, culture and education, and currently a center for the “creative scene”. Leipzig’s tradition as an important trade fair location in Central Europe, with one of the oldest trade fairs in the world, dates back to 1190 and was closely linked to Leipzig’s long-standing role as an international center for the fur trade.
Leipzig has a great musical tradition, which goes back primarily to the work of Johann Sebastian Bach and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and is based, among other things, on the importance of the Gewandhaus Orchestra and the St. Thomas Boys Choir.
I am happy to call this wonderful city my home for the past 3 1/2 years. What surprises me most is the openness of the people and the sense of equality. Everyone accepts everyone as they are and it doesn’t matter what your sexuality or gender is. People here are all about the person. This is something that amazed me, as a village kid.
Why do I think Leipzig will become the new Berlin?
Berlin is a great city, no question. However, Leipzig has something more familiar. It’s smaller, has similar nightlife to Berlin, cost of living is ok, but will increase in the future as more people learn to appreciate the university city. Smaller café streets are common and, what excites me very much, it is the vegan / vegetarian diet more and more incorporated.
Supermarkets are selling more on regionals and there will be more regionals year after year.
Leipzig has a wonderful lake landscape around it. Depending on where you live you have a way of 5–15 minutes by bike.
You are spoilt for choice with more than 20 different lakes. Every water sports enthusiast will find just the right thing, from SUP to kayaking to wake boarding.
Basically, you can write a separate article about the lake landscape of Leipzig. I think this will also come promptly.
Short conclusion, why I prefer Leipzig over Berlin:
- Familiar atmosphere of the people and the city
- Cost of living is more bearable
- Parklands and generally green landscapes
- manageable city life
- For every water lover the dream city
